Several Honda models have been experiencing ignition problems since Honda switched from their conventional cut keys to high security key (laser cut keys) in 2002. The change came about because statistics showed that Hondas were one of the most stolen cars in America.. The following are Honda car models that commonly experience issues with their ignition:
- Accord
- Civic
- CR-V
- Element
- Odysseys
- Pilot
In fact, this change has caused so many issues with the ignitions that there have been several recalls on different models for this issue since 2003.
As with most ignition switches, Honda uses split wafers in their ignitions. The wafers that are used are very sensitive to dirt & dust, which although this is not the main issue, it can be an additional factor causing the ignition issues. The biggest problem that occurs with the wafers is that they get worn out over time. Over a long period of time, the key actually wears away at the very tip of the wafer.
Honda Ignition Complaints
Two of the most common complaints we hear about are that the key either won’t turn or the key won’t go all the way into the ignition.
Since Honda uses split wafers in their ignition, they have to use two (halves) in order to create a whole wafer. Once the whole wafer is created, the key is then able to gently slide into the ignition. The issue with this, however, is that the second one of the tips on the split wafers gets worn out it becomes more and more difficult to turn the ignition switch. When this begins happening, you will often find yourself jiggling and playing with the key in the ignition in an effort to get it to turn. This may work for a little while until the day when the ignition completely locks and won’t turn anymore.
Honda Ignition Solution
Since we understand why the ignition gets stuck or the key won’t enter, the ignition can be either repaired or replaced. Replacing the ignition is one option, however we typically don’t recommend taking your vehicle to the dealer, as it will leave you with quite a dent in your wallet. Unfortunately, most Honda dealers will not take the time to remove the current ignition and repair it as it is typically faster for them to replace all the locks in the car. The other thing you have to consider is that a dealer technician is not going to come to your home to change out your ignition, which means you’re going to have to pay to have to your vehicle towed to the dealership.
So what is the more affordable option? Contact Ignition Repairs to have your vehicle serviced wherever it is currently located. It will not only cost less than the dealer, but you will save on the towing expense as well.
