Toyota Ignition Issues
You’ve probably been noticing it for a while now. The ignition in your Toyota is a little sticky or reluctant to turn. Rather than getting it fixed right away, you figure it still works so what the problem, right? Well it hasn’t been a problem until now when the key simply refuses to turn at all.
This issue frequently occurs with Toyota ignitions partly due to the incorrect design of the ignition cylinder. Toyota ignitions have very little protection from dust and dirt particles allowing them to build up inside the ignition cylinder. When this occurs, the wafers in the ignition and key springs are unable to work correctly.
Another reason why Toyotas commonly have stuck ignitions is because the key itself has gotten worn out. Worn car keys can end up damaging both the housing of the ignition as well as the wafers that are inside over time. Once enough damage has been done, the ignition will ultimately get stuck.
The other possible reason for a stuck ignition, and usually the most likely, is the split wafer system failing. In order to increase the security of their ignitions, Toyota added a new feature to their locks several years ago called a split wafer system. Simply put, the split waiver system contains wafer that are slip in half on the same key cut position. After a long period of using the key in the ignition, one half of a wafer will end up overlapping the other half. This prevents the key from turning, leaving you with a stuck ignition.
